    A Complaint-Free World Will Bowen

    Will Bowen, Humorous Motivational Speaker

Complaining is an epidemic that is destroying our happiness, relationships, health, and success. The problem is that most people aren’t even aware when they complain. In 2006, Will Bowen challenged a handful of people to try and break the habit of chronic complaining by going 21 days without uttering a single complaint. That simple idea exploded into a worldwide movement of more than 13 million followers and has been featured on Oprah, NBC’s Today Show, CBS Sunday Morning, the ABC Evening News, Dr. Oz, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, People magazine, O magazine, and Chicken Soup for the Soul.

    10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

    Morning Choice Sessions (Choose One)

    • Continuing the Conversation of the Keynote - Discussion led by Zach Fountain
    • Digital Storytelling - Derek Duncan, APR, Digital Communications Coordinator, Parkway Schools, Chesterfield, MO
      • If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video has to be worth at least 1.8 million words. Learn what’s at the heart of every story and what elements you need to leave a lasting impression.
    • The Sun Still Rises Tomorrow: Taking the Guilt-Free Summer Vacation You Deserve - Mark Mohammadpour, APR, Founder and Owner, Chasing the Sun Health Coaching
      • As trusted advisors, we must be physically and mentally well to help our organizations meet their objectives. A key success factor is taking time away from emails and meetings. In 2018, American workers failed to use 768 million days of paid time off, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Not taking our deserved time off is detrimental to our physical and psychological health, both of which are essential to help us reduce stress and thrive in our profession. How can we solve this problem of PR professionals not protecting their health and take the necessary breaks from work they have earned? Mark Mohammadpour, APR, and certified personal trainer and health coach who lost and kept off 150 pounds more than 10 years ago, will lead a discussion on how to take guilt-free vacations that will help attendees come back with renewed energy to tackle their jobs.
    • What Everyone Gets Wrong About Creating Advocates - Clare Dietz, Senior Marketing Consultant, Apptegy
      • It's easy to become preoccupied with all the "detractors" - those community members that have negative things to say about you and your schools. However, research shows that the best way to build broad community support is to focus on creating advocates. Yet unlike a marketing campaign that can reach hundreds or thousands, advocates have to be built one by one. In this session, we cover the counterintuitive blueprint to create advocates in your community. Clare Dietz is a marketing consultant for Apptegy. She has spent decades working with some of the biggest marketing firms like Ogilvy and Gartner and advised clients like L'Oreal, Unilever, IBM and Microsoft. Now she consults with school districts on marketing and communication best practices.

    11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

      • Receive tips and tactics to improve community engagement, increase student enrollment, likelihood of bond passage, and improvements in hiring.
    • Cracking Your Toughest Cookies: How to Turn Parents into Brand Evangelists - Josh Sauer, Educational Sales Consultant, Finalsite
Parents can be your school or district's toughest critics...but they can also be your biggest fans. With prospective families relying heavily on online reviews and word of mouth to drive their enrollment decisions, turning your current parents into evangelists is key to growing brand awareness, trust, and your applicant pool. Join members of Finalsite's marketing team for a crash course in cracking your toughest cookies by sharing the right communications, in the right place, at the right time. In this session you will learn:
      • The communication expectations of parents in today's virtual world
      • Communication preferences for Gen X and Millennial parents
      • How to adapt your school-to-home communications to make parents excited about what's happening at school
      • When and how to ask for parent engagement and reviews
    • Starting from Scratch: Social Media Newbie to Old Pro - Matthew Glick, Founder/CEO, Gipper
Is your school struggling with social media? Interested in learning more about how social can be used effectively to improve communication, promote your students, grow your school's brand, and more? If so, then this session is for you. Learning directly from Gipper CEO, Matthew Glick, you'll learn how to use social media to:
      • Better share your school's story
      • Engage your stakeholders
      • Celebrate your students, faculty, and alumni
      • Make data driven decisions
      • Save time, stay organized, and use best-in-class tools to work smarter not harder
    • Stealing Marketing Ideas from the Private Sector - Mark Lienhart, Director of Sales, Apptegy
      • “Marketing” and “branding” have become buzzwords in public education. While everyone uses them, we often hear that leadership teams struggle to get on the same page on how to best market the school districts. As a result, that work often gets thrown onto the communications team — yet marketing and communications or PR are actually completely different things. In our session we walk through two simple yet effective strategies on how to implement marketing ideas from the private sectors.

    Afternoon Choice Sessions (Choose One)

    • Be a Leader Worth Following - Joe Ferdani, APR, Chief Communications Officer, Adams 12 Five Star Schools, Thornton, CO.
      • We are all called to be leaders worth following - at home, work and in the community. But what does that look like? Leaders worth following encourage, empower and challenge others to become the best version of themselves. Learn about your strengths as a leader, as well areas you can grow in; and walk away with practical, easy-to-use tools that will not only bring out the best in you, but also the best in those around you.
    • Using Instagram to Communicate with Students - Tyler Hill, Communications Coordinator, Arlington Community Schools, Arlington, TN
      • It’s a universal fact that schools exists to educate students, yet communication plans often overlook one of the most important stakeholders of all: students. In this presentation, see how Arlington Community Schools (Memphis, Tennessee) is using Instagram (arlington_schools) to communicate with students to go beyond parent-focused communications. Learn how to stand out by building a loyal student following that attracts student-generated content through thoughtful and engaging storytelling and aesthetics.
    • Why "Take Care of Yourself!" Doesn't Work, and What to Do Instead - Timothy (Tim) Grivois, Executive Director, TGS Educational Consulting, Tucson, AZ
      • There is no latte, pedicure, or Netflix binge that will solve the real reasons why you feel overwhelmed. Spend a fun hour with Dr. Tim Grivois, an educator who has spent the last year making self-care his professional responsibility. During this session, we will explore five truths about self-care, and how your own practice of self-care can become a resource for the schools and districts you serve. You will leave our session ready to be as generous with yourself as you are with those you serve, and equipped to support your colleagues' self-care practice effectively.
        Five Truths:
        • Self-care happens from the inside out.
        • Self-care is life.
        • No one can do anyone’s self-care, except their own.
        • There are eight (actually nine, likely more) ways to be happy.
        • Self-care is effective.
